About a quarter of the way into the book, I was caught off-guard by the difference between Discernment and the other two books. Jan 13, Mark rated it it was amazing. Like any good spiritual director, Nouwen makes the process very down-to-earth, showing how his interactions with all of God’s creation, and prayer, led him to the branching off path that would take Nowen ever closer to his real self and thus to God.

What a great privilege to learn from this spiritual leader! It focuses on how one discerns God in one’s everyday life and gives a discernmejt at Nouwen’s thoughts on the subject, especially in light of his move to L’Arche in Toronto in the early 90s.
The remainder of the book takes an memoir-like stroll through Henri’s life as he teaches the practice of paying attention to God. Each chapter concludes with a set of questions. For anyone who is trying to discern God in their lives, whether in the big decisions or the little ones, this is a good book to consult.
Father Nouwen was a good friend of the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin.
