Light reading, but still with an intellectual flavor to it, and very entertaining. Mulliner fascinates everyone with the secret history of old Hollywood. Short story collections by P. It is really a book of two halves with the first half chronicling the Threepwood family of Blandings, the second half concerning Mr Mulliners tall tales and a brief interlude of a story about Bobbie Wickham, a thoroughly modern girl.
Several of the Blandings shorts from this collection were adapted for television by the BBCbroadcast in February and March in six half-hour episodes. I must admit that I can’t quite stomach elsewheer reading his works, but I take a great delight in all that I’ve read, and this is another comedic masterpiece. I slipped in another Wodehouse, since these are trying times and he is balm for the soul.

Yes, there is a certain amount of repetition, even whole paragraphs – principally character descriptions – in different books among the first three. Beefy hlandings Gertrude are on the rocks.

The Hollywood stories didn’t work for me very well; the plots were unbelievable balndings for Wodehouse and the characters really never more than types. Then do your family a favor and read it aloud on your next road trip.

I elsewuere going out to check on the garden. Blandings Castle and Elsewhere Blandings by P. The chief executive throws out some statement of opinion, and looks about him expectantly. Not that I could do a passable British accent at all, but it’s really entertaining. Despite the political and social upheavals that occurred during his life, much of which was spent in France and the United States, Wodehouse’s main canvas remained that of prewar English upper-class society, reflecting his birth, education, and youthful writing career.

Some young couple, elsehwere rather I should say, some young trio is always falling in and out of love in Wodehouse’s stories. In the novels, not an awful lot happens ultimately – it’s elswwhere convoluted; here, whilst there is the odd impersonation and conspiracy, the plots are simpler and so a greater number of substantial events occur in so far as substantial events occur in the world of Blandings at all: Return to Book Page.
When Emsworth and his pig and pumpkin are not the focal point of the story, the topic almost inevitably is love. Did I enjoy Blandings Castle? Since this review is about my reaction, I have to say I found these stories deadly dull. So average together a little over half at 4 stars and the rest and 1 and you get 3 stars.
If he was surprised at the presence of a the younger son of the house in the amber drawing-room with a sack of rats in his hand, he gave no indication of the fact. Blndings and not very demanding–perfect for a plane trip.

A Blandings collection The ivied walls of Blandings Castle have seldom glowed as sunnily as in these wonderful stories — but there are snakes in the rolling parkland ready to nip Clarence, the absent-minded Ninth Casgle of Emsworth, when he least expects it.
I think that Wodehouse’s talent for twisted, clever plots is best displayed in his novels, but I casttle the Emsworth stories bandings are somewhat elsewehre quite a bit a I continue to indulge myself by the occasional purchase of a nice Collector’s Wodehouse hardcover.
There are a couple of Blandings stories, a Bobbie Wickham story, and some American stories about the Mulliners of Hollywood not as interesting.
The last five reflect Wodehouse’s time as a scriptwriter in Hollywood, poking much fun at the ignorance and management of the picture studios by its moguls, and the servile condition of the staff, including the ‘nodders’, whose job was just to nod silently in agreeing with their bosses, but only after the ‘yesmen’ had had their say!
